History

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, is the most opulent and flagship resort at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, opened in 1988 as Grand Floridian Beach Resort. It became Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in 1997. The deluxe resort features 867 rooms inspired by Victorian-era beach resorts. Design elements resemble Mount Washington Resort, Hotel del Coronado, and Belleview-Biltmore Hotel. The resort sits near Magic Kingdom on the man-made Seven Seas Lagoon.

Initially, Walt Disney envisioned resorts to mirror the ‘lands’ of Magic Kingdom, such as a Polynesian resort to reflect Adventureland, the Contemporary Resort to reflect Tomorrowland, and others. The Grand Floridian was set to reflect Main Street. The hotel hosted the Beach Boys for the "Kokomo" music video in 1988. A convention center opened nearby in 1992.
