History

The Grand Californian Hotel & Spa opened on January 2, 2001 as part of the Disney California Adventure expansion. It’s the only Disneyland Resort that is originally built and operated by The Walt Disney Company. A Disney Vacation Club expansion opened in 2009.

The resort was designed with elements of the Craftsman style to evoke the feel of National Park lodges in the Wester United States, particularly the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park and the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park.

The Grand Californian Hotel & Spa was designed by Peter Dominick of the Urban Design Group Inc who also designed Disney’s Wilderness Lodge at the Walt Disney World Resort. They share many thematic elements.
