History

Disneyland Hotel opened on October 5, 1955. It originally opened as a motor inn, as a place for Disneyland visitors to stay overnight because Disneyland was a fair distance from the populations of Southern California at the time. It was privately owned at the time of opening, because Disney’s funds were depleted from creating Disneyland. It continued to grow - with new buildings, adjacent recreational areas, a convention center, the Disneyland Monorail, and more. In 1988, Disney was able to buy the Disneyland Hotel.

In 1999, most of the original Disneyland hotel was demolished to make way for todays Downtown Disney and parking areas for the recently expanded Disneyland parks. Today, none of the original buildings of the Disneyland Hotel are still standing.

The current Disneyland towers received major renovations in 2010 (Adventure Tower), 2011 (Frontier Tower), and 2012 (Fantasy Tower). In 2012 pool renovations occurred, creating the current retro sign display and waterslides.

In September 2023, the Disney opened a new Disney Vacation Club property, The Villas at Disneyland Hotel.
